What is a communication simulator

A communication simulator is software and hardware that faithfully reproduce the behaviour of real radios and military communication systems. Instead of training operators on expensive, scarce in-service equipment, a unit can teach on accurate equivalents — in a classroom or at a computer workstation.
How a radio simulator works
A good radio simulator reproduces not only the look of the front panel but, above all, the device's operating logic: menus, operating modes, channel and crypto programming, jamming handling and emergency procedures. The trainee presses exactly the same buttons and follows the same steps as on real equipment, so the habits transfer 1:1 to field conditions.
Simulators cover different classes of equipment — from man-pack military radios of the AN/PRC type, through vehicle-mounted sets, to equipment from manufacturers such as Rohde & Schwarz (R&S). For the instructor this means consistent training regardless of whether a specific physical unit is available.
Benefits of simulation-based training
- Availability — many training stations instead of single radio units.
- Safety — no risk of damaging equipment and no emissions on the air during practice.
- Repeatability and assessment — the instructor designs scenarios, monitors the session and objectively grades operators.
Communication simulators in Nowatel's portfolio
Our portfolio includes simulators of radios and communication systems, part of the broader family of Nowatel military simulators. These solutions integrate with the Integrated Interactive Training Platform, enabling a comprehensive, measurable operator-training process.
