M3SR 4400 — Advanced HF/VHF Radio Station Simulator
The M3SR 4400 is a professional training simulator that faithfully reproduces the functionality and operational behavior of Rohde & Schwarz M3SR class radio stations. Designed for naval, land and civil communications training, the system provides realistic audio modeling, full control of transmitter and receiver parameters, NATO-compliant data terminals, and a wide range of instructor tools for scenario creation, assessment and fault injection.
Core capabilities
- Full presentation and definition of device states: availability (power and module health), activity indicators (SQUELCH/CARRIER, PTT), gain levels, and operation in local or remote mode.
- Comprehensive control: frequency/channel programming, selection of modulation type and bandwidth, transmitter gain adjustment, noise control enable/disable, speaker volume control, emergency receiver activation, and simulation of station failures.
- Support for secure upload of configuration data using a simulated programmer (Fill Gun), enabling realistic operational workflows.
- Realistic voice and data communications across selected frequencies and operating modes, including HQII, SATURN (VHF/UHF), ALE and 3G (HF), with both point-to-point and networked (many-to-many) topologies.
- Data transmission support via simulated terminals: STANAG 5066 (R&S STANAG 5066 application), R&S HF Chat, and emulation of ACP-127 message reception/transmission for NATO interoperability.
- Monitoring of other stations’ frequencies and acoustic behavior; signal audibility varies in response to changes in frequency, modulation and simulated propagation conditions.
- Simplex operation triggered by PTT — pressing PTT enables transmission and simultaneously mutes receive audio at the workstation, mirroring real-world procedures.
- Automated built-in tests and a fault localization tester that runs at power-up, plus the ability for instructors to generate emergency and fault states for training purposes.
- Graphical visualization of unattended equipment components (e.g. power amplifiers) included in the radio station configuration, aiding identification and troubleshooting exercises.
Training benefits
M3SR 4400 lowers training costs and complexity by removing the need for physical antenna fields, reducing wear on operational equipment, and minimizing spectrum usage. The simulator operates over LAN and integrates with the NowaSim management platform, allowing centralized control of multiple training workstations, recording and replay of sessions, remote supervision, and synchronized voice communications between heterogeneous simulators. Instructors can craft detailed scenarios, enforce faults, vary propagation parameters and assess trainee performance in real time.
Delivery, integration and compliance
The system is supplied with full user documentation and can be tailored to specific training requirements — scenario libraries, testing modules and examiner tools are available. Software updates and feature extensions are supported. Compliance with NATO standards and protocols (STANAG, ACP-127) makes M3SR 4400 suitable for military, coast guard and emergency services training where interoperability and procedural accuracy are essential.
