N 152A

The N 152A simulator from Nowatel is a high-fidelity training solution designed to replicate the operational behavior of a tactical military radio. It combines precise emulation of hardware controls and signal behaviour with a browser-based interface, enabling safe, repeatable and cost-effective practical training for operators and instructors.

Realistic operation and controls

The simulator reproduces the front and rear panels, the radio display and handset graphically while allowing real interaction with control elements. Users can physically (virtually) connect or disconnect core elements such as battery, antenna or side‑port data devices. All front‑panel inputs accept real parameter entry: frequencies, modulation, power and cryptographic settings where applicable.

Core capabilities

  • Power on/off emulation and full state presentation for the simulated radio.
  • Frequency and modulation programming per channel, with the display reflecting the last settings for each session.
  • Simplex voice connections are established automatically when two stations share matching parameters; transmission is active only while holding the PTT button, which simultaneously mutes the receiver.
  • Volume control, interactive Tangent (PTT) button, and a menu system allowing access to all functions.
  • Web browser operation (Firefox, Chrome) with user authentication (login/password) and administrator account management.
  • Shared server architecture enabling multi‑station environments and instructor oversight.

Instructor tools and network integration

An instructor application displays availability and current parameters (frequency, modulation, power) and indicates PTT and SQUELCH/CARRIER states for each trainee. When parameters match across simulators within the network, seamless voice communication is possible. If connected to physical radios (where permitted), interoperability between simulated and real devices can be supported. Integration with the NowaSim system enables centralized control, remote start/stop of stations, scenario management and cross‑simulator voice links.

Diagnostics and test suite

The simulator includes a comprehensive set of test tools to verify hardware and software integrity:

  • BERT — Bit Error Rate Test for narrowband channels.
  • SELF TEST — built‑in hardware module diagnostics.
  • WIDEBAND TEST — tests for wideband transmission and reception.
  • LCD TEST — checks display segments for failures.
  • SW VALIDATION — validates OS and application files (encrypted and unencrypted) to confirm integrity since installation.
  • KEYPAD TEST — verifies front‑panel button operation.
  • MIC TEST — visual meter bars to confirm audio output levels.

Operational modes and frequency coverage

The simulator supports user entry of parameters and operational modes described in the user manual (Publication No.: 10515-0409-4201, June 2015), including VULOS, HPW, HAVEQUICK I/II, ANW2 and ANW2C. Supported frequency ranges and modulation types include:

  • 30 MHz to 512 MHz (Low VHF: 30–225 MHz; UHF: 225–512 MHz); High VHF: 512–520 MHz; UHF SATCOM: RX 243–270 MHz, TX 292–318 MHz.
  • Modulation: AM and FM.

Training benefits

By employing the N 152A simulator organizations reduce equipment wear, eliminate the need for on‑field antenna ranges and spectrum fees, and accelerate training throughput. The system records all sessions for after‑action review and provides instructors with the tools to create tailored scenarios, assess trainee performance and improve overall readiness.
