N 160
N 160
The N 160 simulator delivers a high-fidelity training environment for radio communications operators. Built to reproduce both the visual and operational aspects of the real radio, it combines precise signal behavior, authentic audio modelling and a fully interactive front and rear panel. The simulator is designed for use as a standalone training station or as part of a networked exercise environment, fully integrated with the NowaSim platform for multi-station scenarios and instructor supervision.
Visual fidelity extends to the radio display, handset and controls, enabling trainees to train on procedures exactly as they would on live equipment. The Tangent (PTT) control behaves like the real device: transmission is simplex and active only while PTT is pressed, and pressing PTT mutes received audio on the transmitting station. Operators can change parameters during a session and immediately perceive the effect on audibility and link establishment.
Accessible from standard web browsers (Firefox, Chrome), the application includes an authentication and account-management system for administrators. The instructor application provides a comprehensive supervisory toolkit: real-time availability of simulator stations, display of current frequency, modulation and power settings, PTT and SQUELCH/CARRIER status indicators, and remote control over session start/stop and monitoring. All simulators operate on a shared server to support coordinated, multi-node exercises and interoperability between different simulated radio types.
Key capabilities and training scenarios include:
- power on/off and status presentation with session persistence of last-configured parameters;
- frequency and modulation entry for selected channels, listening and monitoring features;
- realistic audibility modelling based on frequency, modulation and transmit power settings;
- automatic acoustic link establishment when station parameters match; voice communication between stations;
- volume control and an on-screen menu that exposes all operational functions;
- support for simulation of acoustic interference and component faults (optional training expansions);
- compatibility options for hybrid operation with physical radios where hardware permits.
Operational specifications:
- Frequency ranges: 1.5 MHz – 59.9999 MHz (AME); 30 MHz – 59.999 MHz (FM)
- Modulations: J3E, H3E (AM); A1A, J2A, F3E (FM)
- Operating modes: FIXED, VULOS, 2G ALE, 3G ALE (with FLSU, HCMAC, LDV, SMS), HOP (anti-jamming)
Deploying the N 160 simulator reduces equipment wear, eliminates the need for field antenna setups and spectrum leasing for training, and increases throughput of trainees while maintaining high instructional quality. All training sessions can be recorded and reviewed, supporting assessment and certification workflows. Thanks to its realistic behavior, web-based accessibility and integration with NowaSim, the N 160 is an effective, scalable tool for practical radio operator training and mission rehearsal.
